I love breakfasts out. Always have, always will. Have done them all - the English Breakfast, the American Breakfast, the Military hotel idlis and kheema curry, the South Indian breakfast, the North Indian one... you get the drift. I love me my any kind of breakfast. And so when Nasi and Mee launched their Asian inspired breakfast, an invitation to try it out could not be declined. We headed there a Sunday morning and here is what we had.

Freshly Brewed Black Coffee - is available with milk as well and there is no better way to start a breakfast. The beverage menu is quite an interesting one and so space yourself out to make room for more them.

We began with the Sambal Cheese Toast - I mean, come on, the description had me at sambal! I am all for nice spice - I am the one who can eat Priya Pickle sandwiches in the middle of the night. And so I am a sucker for all things sambal and its ilk. This black plate of happiness is the N&M blend of Sambal, Cheddar and Parmesan cheese toasted in sourdough, with wild arugula and spiced tomato relish. Its crisply toasted, well balanced with all the textures and tastes coming through very well. A perfect was to start breakfast and wake up all those sleeping taste buds.

Now what breakfast would be complete without some eggs. And so up next was Thai Style Eggs Benedict which is poached Eggs on a bed of sourdough, chicken ham, topped with Tom Yum Hollandaise. Its the laced hollandaise which makes all the difference and by the time this dish came to the table, I really wanted to know where N&M gets its arugula from. Its so fresh and punch-filled with every bite. And oh yes... those eggs run very well when sliced down the middle.

Synonymous to street snacking in Asia is the Singapore Kaya Toast - generously slathered with coconut jam. So here at N&M the jam is made in-house. Its nice and sweet and perfectly sandwiched between two slices of toast that don't have their edges on them (just the way I love my sandwiches). But considering I am not too much of a sweet-in-the-morning kind of person, I had to ask for sausages on the side.

The N&M Big Breakfast puts together some of those individual choices on the menu to give you a nice and heavy start to the day. - Choice of two eggs prepared with the goodness of arugula, sautéed sausages and Kaya toast. That's quite a plateful and you will be a very happy diner post it... especially if you pair this with the Iced Milo Shake that you see below.

Ice Blended Milo Shake - Now this is one of those drinks that will take you racing back in time - just about the same way Anton Ego did in Ratatouille. Its all sorts of good, happiness inducing and delicious. Think a thick Milo shake with crushed ice topped with a generous sprinkling of Milo powder.

And because the spice fiend in me couldn't help it, I needed to end on the Triple Decker Corn Fritters, with cherry tomato, wild arugula and and balsamic glaze on sourdough bread. This one hits the spot well and can be a complete breakfast dish in itself. Make sure to slice all the way through the deck, pick up a bit of everything (do not forget that argula and make sure to save some for the end)

And finally breakfast ended with Kopitiam Teh Tarik literally translating to Pulled Tea. It takes a bit of getting used - its looks like your average good cuppa but has a more pronounced flavour. But it is something that will make a great beginning or end to your breakfast.

Breakfast begins early here at 8.00AM and only on Sundays goes on till 11.00AM every weekend. An average meal for two is around Rs 1200 if you are really generous with what you order. If you time yourself well, you can get straight into the regular menu which is quite a treat too. And do not forget to dive into the bowl of XO that comes to the table.

Breakfast at BYLI - Bet You Love It

I love breakfast. Its the one meal that is a pain to deal with each morning, but nevertheless I love breakfast. A while ago I started chronicling all the breakfast places we happen to visit. Of course, the south Indian breakfast is always a favourite, but I do love trying all others. You can read about some of our breakfast experiences here.

Recently we were invited to BYLI - Bet You Love It in Kamanahalli to try out their breakfast menu. We took up the offer simply because it was an all-day breakfast and the distance on a weekend, served as an outing of sorts.

BYLI does not have parking of its own and we were lucky to find some right opposite the restaurant which is opposite Aioli if you are familiar with the area. They have an AC section that was packed on the day of our visit. We sat on the outside which is quite comfortable and has a lovely indoor water fountain that sets a very soothing tone.

BYLI's breakfast menu is available from 9.30AM to 2.30PM. So all you late risers can still have your first meal of the day, even at unconventional hours.

Toblerone MilkShake - The description did say that Toblerone was blended with chocolate ice-cream. I did not feel that too much though. What I did taste was a great chocolate milkshake, with nougat drizzle on the side, topped off with some lovely thick whipped cream. I would have liked a little of the nutty bite of Toblerone. But this did make for a great milkshake.

Hot Chocolate - I wanted to get some milk down Anoushka and so asked for some hot chocolate. The art in the cup are some of the small pleasures in life for someone Anoushka's age. The hot chocolate was nice.

Sudhakar asked for a Latte which he declared was good.

And now, getting down to the breakfast. Sudhakar had The M&S Scramble - 3 eggs beaten with 4 cheeses - Monterey Jack, Cheddar, Cream Cheese and Swiss Cheese with ranch potatoes and an addition of chicken ham or sausages. The eggs were topped over with some scallions and it gave the cheesy eggs some great crunch. The ranch potatoes are on the spicier side and will perk up your taste buds after the cheese and eggs. The toast was crisp, just the way I like it.

Of the breakfast platters, the Big BYLI Breakfast is by far the largest. You get a cheesy omelette, chicken sausages, hash browns, mushrooms, and roasted tomatoes. All of this makes for a hearty breakfast. The roasted tomatoes could have done with a little more time on the grill. I would have also preferred them sliced and not squashed to a mush. What I really missed on the platter was bacon, but then the restaurant does not serve pork but still manages to put up a great breakfast.

Toast with Me - French Toast with Chicken Ham slices and Cheese - This was a nice mix of sweet and savoury with neither flavours overpowering each other. A filling breakfast option for when you are on the go or for a child at the table.

Its OK to Waffle with BYLI - the Waffles are nice and come with the works - Maple Syrup, thick chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a generous cover of icing sugar!

The breakfast menu at BYLI is quite extensive, with several options. It gives you enough of choice to try something new on several return visits. The service is pleasant and efficient. A meal for two will be within the Rs 600 bracket if you really indulge yourself. They do have an all-day cafe menu as well.

Grubnomic

When you have had some good grub and have not put up the experience for a long while, then you are guilty of not spreading the good word. I am definitely guilty as charged especially over the last two months. So without further ado, lets get things back on track, starting with Grubnomic in Koramangala. If you know where Cakewalk, stop right there, enter the gate on the side and walk on upstairs and you have arrived.

I read about Grubnomic on the online grapevine and we visited the place twice - generous portion sizes ensure that you really can have just one or one and half dishes at a time with a yogurt smoothie to wash it down. So many things looked great on the menu that we had to get back there one more time. Especially so when words like bacon/bacon add-on/pork sausages/beef/meat loaded/spicy-tangy jump put at you from the menu.

The first time, we went there, Bangalore was still pretty much reeling under the summer sun, despite which we chose to sit on their terrace that was semi-covered. The wall mounted fans did the best they could and the large swing was an attraction for Anoushka and my photos came out really well, but I did make a note to myself - in summer, just sit indoors and right under the fan.

We started with the Greasy Cheesy Garlic Fries - come on, grease, cheese and garlic, how can you say not to a snacky something like that. It did not disappoint on the cheese and the garlic (lovely toasted garlic bits it was), but it could have done with a bit more on the grease factor (we are the ones who don't bother when we are indulging).

Saucy Tangy Pork Sausages - This is just because we love to act like we don't have sausages regularly at home. These were hot, spicy and tangy as promised and a wonderful plate to nibble on when you are waiting for your grub to arrive. Make sure that you divide your share on the plate right at the beginning, this one is a fork fight hazard.

I love yogurt smoothie and had a nice cold one called Berry Berry. Chunky bits galore in this tall glass. Sudhakar had an ice tea (I think it was a Litchi flavored one). Can't really go wrong here.

Another time, another ice tea and a black currant yogurt smoothie - this time we were sitting on the inside and the coolness was much appreciated, both from the drinks and from the room.

I was ecstatic to see Mini Pizzas in chicken and vegetarian. Anoushka's meal was set when we visited for lunch. These are two mini pizzas with a base of tomato sauce, chicken and covered in molten cheese. Perfectly portioned and good tasting... Baby was a happy puppy and so was mama.

This was Anoushka's second request, after she was done with her pizzas - Pancakes - simple and sweet - honey and maple syrup. I was one happy Mama. Nice and fluffy, if I had to nitpick, the sugar dusting could have been delicate, but honestly it does not take away from the pancake treat.

The Classic Cheeseburger with bacon and fried egg - A wholesome burger this was - quite the mouthful. heavy on the cheese (but of course!), lovely caramelized onions and the strong bite of the raw ones. Sudhakar felt the burger was a bit chewy though.

Meat Mojo in Beef - this one took me back to my days in Manipal eons ago. We had a burger place there that required you remove your watch and rings if you were going to eat. The burgers were always stuffed to the brim and making a mess was mandatory. I have never been a neat burger eater and make no apologies for it. For the Meat Mojo, I took off my watch, was a little neater than the days of yore and actually plowed through the entire burger without a break (a thing I am rather incapable of when it comes to burgers). If you like hot, spicy to a nice level, moist meat burgers then this is the one for you.

Meat loaded French Toast with a bacon add-on (but of course) - French Toast is a popular favorite at home - we do variations with bananas, cinnamon powder, vanilla, apples - of course bacon also makes it way to our French toast. So when you get the option of loading your French Toast with sausages and bacon besides the chicken that it comes with, that sneaky little devil look is bound to run across your face a couple of times. Indulgent and good on the tummy.

Chicken Steak burger with jalapeno relish was my meal on the second visit. Very often chicken burgers tend to get rubbery and chewy and very very dry. This one did none of the sorts. It was juicy and the jalapeno relish gave it that pleasurable punch.

Service at Grubnomic is very personal and friendly. Food hits the table pretty soon after you order. There are a few quirky things in the decor, like a gold-sprayed collection of audio tapes that have been tied together to make a wall piece and the multi-colored thread splayed across one wall on the first floor. The toilet is unisex and kept clean. The place is reasonable too and a meal for 2.5 like we are now (considering Anoushka is now a full eating member of the family but yet to reach our level) is around Rs 800.

Leaping Windows

Its been a spate of invites this month and boy am I relieved to get back talking about the places we have gone to in the midst of it all. We love finding new places for breakfast and recently heard a lot of good things about Leaping Windows and so one Sunday morning headed off for their all-day breakfast. A stone's throw from Indiranagar Club, Leaping Windows is a nice big house converted into a restaurant.

The place was packed to the gills when we arrived but we managed to get a table soon enough - more of a glass bar stool with three chairs around it. This was out on the large balcony which was also the smoking area. Not quite comfortable there, we finally moved into one of the inner rooms - much more peaceful, pleasant and with spacious tables.

The entire place is covered with art work covering a lot of genres - from digital prints to comic based art and more (not much of an art person here talking obviously). There is a nice little library downstairs that you may rent a time slot to sit and read in. The staircase is a little tricky to navigate for klutzes like me.

Getting down to the food - the All-day breakfast has a number of pull-factors. It's one of those menus where everything sounds good, so you want to say "1 of everything to your waiter" but you know you can't. So we started small and decided to work our way up - The Basil Pesto and Sausage French Toast sounded like a great way to begin. And when it arrived, we were proven right.

At first glance you may think that your French toast is burnt and may even try to scrape it off. But then you realize that it is a thick coating of luscious looking basil pesto and all those scrapings you got off by accident, you will silently slip into your mouth. That is one seriously good pesto - thick bread, made moist in the French Toast batter and the very generous layer of sausages on top ensured that this dish was polished off in a few minutes.

The good thing about Leaping Windows is that you can enhance your meal with wilted spinach, bacon, mashed potatoes and a whole lot of other interesting add-ons. So we took wilted spinach, which comes with flecks of garlic which still have their bite. We love garlic that way, but I can understand not many others may.

I opted for the Full House Pork Breakfast. This comes with eggs of your choice. I opted for scrambled, bacon and pork sausages (oink! to the porcine gods), a choice of mashed potatoes, mushrooms or wilted spinach - I took mashed potatoes. And finally watermelon juice (am guessing this is a seasonal option), tea or coffee. All of this on a plate, with a healthy drizzle of balsamic and I was sitting with one hand raised in protective cover of my meal.

What I really appreciated about the bacon here is that it is of really good quality. The type you pay a premium for at 5 star breakfast buffets. And thankfully it was not fried to a crisp where the fat is completely gone and the bacon becomes chewy. I found a tiny piece of egg shell in my scramble - forgivable in my kitchen, but not otherwise. Even then, it did not do anything to spoil this meal in any way. The watermelon juice was as fresh as it could be and cool.

Anoushka, though primarily vegetarian by choice has not managed to steer clear of bacon yet. Its a favorite, as are pancakes and when the two were available as a combination, there was no thinking twice for her. I am yet to wrap my head around sweet pancake with maple syrup and salty bacon - it does taste good, but it will take me a while to get used to it.

We were not completely done yet and wanted just a little something from the regular menu that opens up in addition to the all-day breakfast at 12PM. So the Scrummy Rocket and Bacon salad with pine nuts, home made croutons, maple balsamic dressing and an add-on of feta cheese. Just a look at the ingredients is enough to tell you it was a great salad - well balanced in terms of ingredients and dressing. Sudhakar rounded off his breakfast with a Honey Bee Cappuccino, thanks to which he now makes only Honey Cinnamon coffee at home to drink.

There is so much more on this menu that I would like to try out - like the Nutella stuffed waffles, anything where I can bring in the add-on of beef tenderloin, the pear and feta salad, the bacon carbonara pasta and much more. The service here is one of those few places that is spot on despite being a full house. We never had to wait too long for anything. This meal came to about Rs 650. The loo is clean.

Everybody needs to get up to some Monkey Business to unwind and the new Monkey Bar at Indiranagar can give you just the space for that. It has everything that you are already familiar with - the exposed brick, the quirky frames, the diabolical After Death sauce on the table, a pool table and Foosball, the signature Maanga... and before you say "been there done that"... let me add that it has a whole lot of new things for you to try as well. Recently, I was invited to a bloggers/media table, the attendance to which took up most of the mezzanine floor.

This formidable crowd made its way up the spiral staircase (which am guessing after a few of the drinks can be quite a interesting route to navigate) and were introduced to the concept of the new Monkey Bar by Manu Chandra. Interesting anecdotes to the new dishes and drinks (some true, some contrived, some a total flight of imagination) we were told.

So here is a look at the new Monkey Bar... a photo review since there was a serious amount of food that we got through and drinks too no doubt.

Ginger Rogers (Gin, Ginger Ale, Peach Syrup), Maanga (Vodka, Aam Panna, Sweet Lime), Red Riding Wood (Vodka, Fresh Plum, Passion fruit, apple juice), Wild Leaf at the back (Vodka, Lime Leaves, Passion Fruit and fresh orange) and Copper Monkey - not in picture (Whisky, Passion Fruit, mint and orange juice) were on the drinks menu that day. What stood out for me was the Ginger Rogers, with a nice punch of ginger and the adorable coconut-like ceramic bowl it was served in and the Wild Life - though subsequent orders of Wild Life did seem different both visually and taste-wise mainly because of the difference in proportion of the orange and passion fruit. Copper Monkey too seemed to be in demand.

The food started rolling in just in time to pacify rumbling stomachs. I sampled the non-vegetarian offerings predominantly beginning with the Monkey Bar Signature - Tiger Beef - A generous mouthful of several ingredients that come together to make beautiful music - chilli paste, black beans, galangal, ginger, bean sprouts, lemon bok choy and peppers all mixed together with slices of steak...

Monkey Bar makes it a habit to surprise - how else would you explain the presence of a salad on a bar menu - the Roasted Beet and Orange salad has thin slivers of beetroot and orange and is tossed with mustard lettuce, feta cream, sesame beans, crumbled feta and very interestingly textured toasted and candied walnuts. An atonement for indulgence you may call this sinfully delightful concoction.

The Crab Rangoon is a superb rendition of the American street food version - fried wontons stuffed to the crisp edges with crab meat and cream cheese with a sweet chilli sauce. A never-ending supply of this and a continuous stream from the bar is all I would need honestly!

There were two versions of the non-vegetarian Pirogies (Polish dumplings that are pan-seared) that found its way to the table - the chicken, celery and jalapeno and the spicy Italian pork sausage mince - for once chicken trumped pork for me - I couldn't get enough of the chicken pirogies that had everything you needed - meat, crunch from the celery, heat from the jalapeno and tangy from sour cream (I think) dip. The pork version did not match up to its name of being spicy and had most of its fat rendered into the cover which did not come together well.

The Tempura Calamari is pleasant with its green curry glaze, wasabi mayo and fresh scallions.

The Goan Chorizo Pao is filling and good on taste, a little less vinegary than I like my Goan chorizos - the tomatoes and onions can do that to meat. It's a method I follow when making a pulao out of the meat. But in keeping with popular tastes, this version is a good way to go.

I love me a burger that is messy to eat and when the BBQ flavored shredded pork Sloppy Joe came to the table, I was a happy puppy, albeit quite stuffed already (there are a few more dishes that made an appearance and disappearance before photos could be taken). Nice burger folks this one is, sloppy to the T and the sweet potato crisps on the side add a nice crunch - a fries version perhaps would have been more appreciated.

Pork Belly Sliders - the one and only time pork belly did not work for me - a mix of twice cooked crispened braised pork belly, grilled scallions and sprouts, chilli mayo and basil. The twice cooked took away the fatty taste that I love and there was a slight bitter aftertaste, possibly from the sprouts. That being said, there were a few others at the table who did like it... it always boils down to individual tastes.

Notable others on the table was the Berry Pulao, an Iranian dish with chicken kebabs and shredded chicken with fried onions and potato salli. There was also the Parsi Orderlies Mutton Curry - a mutton chop curry with a finishing of grated cheese, if you please!! served with coconut and clove rice. I was already stuffed to kingdom come and went on the basis of the oohs and aahs on the table - it was good!

There were two desserts - The Chocolate pot de creme with salted caramel of which I have no photo thanks to it being part of a spot game. Highlights of the dessert was the caramel popcorn on top and the olive oil. Very nice for chocolate lovers. The other was the Lemon Cake which is going to be my standard order from now on - a lemon syrup soaked pound cake with lemon curd - very very lemony and if you don't like very lemony, this is not for you... but it most definitely is for me.

This brought us to the end of the showcase at Monkey Bar Indiranagar. It does do their popular

'Breakfirst' and kids are not allowed post 6PM. A meal for two here is approximately Rs 1200 to Rs 1400 with drinks. There are loos on the ground and top floor for convenience and are clean.

There are some places that catch your attention the second they open their doors to the public. Call it great marketing or the power of social media, there are a few new places that simply scream out for you to come check them out and get a feel of the place asap. Church Street Social is one such place. So thank goodness we were invited to Sunday brunch at the place recently and got to experience it first hand.

Let me tell you that any place that does a good breakfast has already got brownie points from me. Social was quite packed on the Sunday we headed there. There is always clamour for a new place and it is in these few initial weeks that an impression has to made. What did bode well for us when we got in there was that despite this being an invite, the word of our arrival did not reach the right ears and so we were just another group entering the place. Gave us a good sense of how the place generally is.

We were seated immediately and took a few minutes to take in the place. Exposed brick walls, eclectic lighting fixtures, Tissue paper designed on a roll, a ruler-based cutlery stand... lots of little quirks in the place that grab your attention. The menus are designed to be rolled up newspapers, grey for the food menu and blue for the drinks. We had two of the wait staff that stopped by the table regularly. Everything on the menu looked fabulous and so it was going to be quite a task ordering, even though we had a good number to our group.

One of the first drinks to come to the table was the Cosmo-explosion - a Martini glass filled with cotton candy and then doused with a mix of Vodka, Cranberry and Triple Sec. A candied orange peel is then set on fire and plopped into the drink. Great on the theatrics and equally good on the alcohol and taste.

Anoushka was with us and so Saddlebags - Pancakes stuffed with bacon, chicken sausages and topped off with eggs with maple syrup on the side was called for. I have never been one for maple syrup on bacon, but the little champ enjoyed it and from the number of swipes the rest took off her plate, it was obvious the combination was a great one.

Now when you read a name like Aacharoska on the drinks menu, you can't help but order it, especially when it has your all time favorite lime pickle as a core ingredient. So in a classic pickle jar comes a vodka + sweet n sour + lime pickle + lemon wedge and mint drink, which was way up on the charts in terms of innovative and bang on the spot.

Earl of Gin is bound to catch every tea lovers eye - Gin + Earl Grey + tang. This one didn't really come together as the tea bag was left to infuse in room temperature water and nothing happened. Perhaps a tea decoction pre-made and provided would work better.

Hot Shoddy - for those who would like to drink with a bad throat - a hot concoction of Brandy, honey and fresh cinnamon, with a slice of lime and apple and cloves. As soothing as it is aromatic. 2 rounds of this found its way to the table.

And now for some food - Elvis fan at the table just had to have the Elvis Presley French Toast - thick slices of bread drenched in peanut butter, drowned in french toast batter, fried and served with bananas and dusting of sugar and served on a vinyl record! - Let's just say that the sounds coming from said Elvis fan at the table were enough to make us go red!

I narrowed down on the OTT Dawg - a dog that was really over the top - a bacon wrapped dog, topped with Mexican Lamb Chilli, cheese and fries. I love gooey meat in dogs and burgers and this one fit the description to the last T of OTT and then some more. On the spicy side but in a good way (for me).

The fish tacos with prawn crackers - pleasant without being too memorable

Sid's Very Posh Breakfast has it all - Two eggs of your style, toast, jam and butter, hash browns, baked beans (though this was the canned variety and after you have been spoiled by a certain home style recipe available close by its tough to accept), sausages, bacon and coffee - It's a massive tray that takes a good chunk of your table, but it packs in a good deal in that size.

Old Smoke arrived at the table - an upside down whiskey glass filled with hickory smoke that you turn over and pour in your mix of whiskey, sweet n sour that filters through an orange zest. Again, the gimmickyness seemed to live up to taste expectations as well.

The Anda Shammi kebab was next on the list - Shammi kebab with a mozzarella and red onion stuffing for a twist, in between a pav with some mint chutney on the side. This one you have to eat to experience. The shammi got the approval of the Hyderabadi Muslim khaana expert at the table. Soon after this we had the shammi kebab as a slider and in a mini burger form at two different places (seems to be the innovation of the season) but both of them did not match up to this one.

And as if all this was not enough, we had the Mexican Poutine - house fries with a Mexican meat sauce. Awesome when you are sipping on a drink. But this also essentially sealed any chances of us having dessert to wrap up the meal. So instead we asked for the Blue Pill or Red.

The Blue Pill or Red is Vodka + Gin and Berries with Blue Curacao in a Syringe. You inject it into the red liquid and watch it turn a deep dark blue before you sip on.

And that brought us to the end of the indulgence. The food is brilliant, no question on that but where I think Church Street will need to majorly look into is the service aspect. It was quite good on the day we went, except for the fact that there were large gaps of time in between placing an order and having it come to the table. Dishes asked for in the beginning came close to the end of the meal after reminders. All of this is typical of every new establishment. The food and drinks here score high and with spot on service on full house days, the place is bound to rock, as the packed tables already show.

A meal for two here would be in the Rs 2500 bracket with two drinks each. The price factor for the place is phenomenally good.
